A Letter to the New Mother

Being a parent is tough stuff. It is certainly not for the faint of heart. As a relatively new mother to an 8 month old, I know how difficult it can be. Kudos to you who have more than one child, it's tough for me with just one right now! I know that I am no expert, and I will never claim to be. All I hope to do through my articles is to give a ray of hope to other mothers going through similar circumstances.
I know how it feels to go into motherhood hearing all of the wonderful stories and then having this newborn in your arms and feeling anything but wonderful! Yes, you love this little creature with this inexplicable gut-wrenching  love... but no one quite tells you how hard it is. Honestly, I don't think anyone can prepare you for motherhood through words alone. Only you can know what it's like once you experience it.
No one is an expert when it comes to being a parent. When you start to think you have it down pat, your kid throws you for a loop on something new. So if we all struggle, why do we have these mommy wars anyway? Because when it comes right down to it, we all are just trying to do the best we can. This whole Mommy war thing has to stop, because really each and every child is different and we do not know what that mother is going through unless we walk a mile in her shoes. Being a parent is hard enough without fighting with someone who should be a support system.
So many mothers struggle in silence, thinking it makes them look weak or a bad parent if they ask for guidance. When asked how they are, they say things like "great," "fine." They say all the pleasant happy things that all mothers know is not the case. We need to be a community of women who support each other and ask, "are you really okay?" "I know you are probably having a hard time, and that's okay."
Just know that it IS okay if you are having a hard day, a hard week, or even a hard month! With children this happens. Just know that you are not alone, that it is okay, an that things WILL get better!
